Before and after. Documenting the destruction of the Arch of Triumph in Palmyra, Syria - stock photo

Looking north west up the Great Colonnade from a position directly in front of the ruined Arch of Triumph. Low early morning sunlight casts long shadows across the ruins of Palmyra as a sand storm sweeps dust filled clouds out of the east and low over the remarkable ruins of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. On 4th October 2015 it was revealed that the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) had partially destroyed the nearly 2,000-year-old Arch of Triumph in the ancient city of Palmyra, Syria. The destruction of the Arch has continued since then. The montage shows the sequential destruction of the Arch of Triumph. Upper image: Arch before 4th October 2015 Lower image: Arch after 3rd November 2015 The Arch is documented in the upper image before it was partially destroyed by 4th October 2015. The most recent footage (in the lower image) from 3rd November 2015 shows all four of the arches have now been destroyed. Ancient history is vanishing in Syria and along with it the Syrian peoples shared identity and cultural heritage.
