The gardens were designed by prominent Zen monk, poet and garden designer Muso Soseki (also known as Muso Kokushi) the temple is famous for both its gardens. The large array and diversity of its plants have given the temple its nickname "Temple of Flowers. Zuisenji is classified in Japan as an Important Cultural Property and Place of Scenic Beauty.
