Waves crash against the promenade in Dover after parts of Britain were lashed by a massive storm overnight which claimed at least two lives, caused millions of pounds of damage and plunged road and rail networks into chaos. *31/10/2000 Relieved ferry passengers have described their 20-hour ordeal stranded in a storm-tossed English Channel waiting for the port of Dover to re-open. P&O Stena directed six ferries with more than 6,000 passengers on board from Calais to a relatively calm bay known locally as The Downs where boats were held until it was safe to dock at the Kent port, which was shut due to the weather. A total of 1,700 people on board one ship, the P&O Stena Line Kent, which sailed from Calais on Sunday night, eventually disembarked almost 20 hours later. *People were warned to stay at home as emergency services battled to deal with the aftermath of the worst weather to hit the south since the great hurricane of 1987.
