Uesugi Kenshin

Uesugi Kenshin was one of the major figures in Japan's mid-sixteenth century wars of unification. He listens deep in thought to the song of a blind lutist. Kenshin's head is shaved - he became a priest in 1552, though this did nothing to slow his military career. The fruit before him is printed carefully to suggest roundness, a roundness echoed in the lamp, wall decoration and shaved head.
