Caption: WOODY ISLAND, CHINA-JUNE 9, 2012: This June 9th image shows the Jinggangshan, the second Yuzhao-class (Type-071) Assault Ship (LPH), dead-in-the-water off Woody Island. The Jinggangshan carries air cushion vehicles, landing craft and a contingent of marines and provides the PLAN with the means to project power into the South China Sea. During the past 20 years China has become increasingly aggressive in its claims within the South China Sea, often deploying both small garrisons to fortify islands and sending People’s Liberation Army Navy vessels to operate within the region.
