Blair visits Asylum centre in Croydon

The Prime Minister, Tony Blair, is shown the finger printing bureau by it's manager Sue Caulfield during his visit with the Home Secretary, David Blunkett, to the asylum screening unit in Croydon, South London. A pilot scheme using biometrics - which use fingerprints, iris or facial recognition data contained in a microchip - has already been launched in Sri Lanka. Asylum seekers are fingerprinted and issued with ID cards containing a chip. The Home Office did not give details of how widely the biometric requirement will be used or how quickly it will be introduced on visas. (Photo by Chris Ison - PA Images/PA Images via Getty Images)
