Suburban jungle of houses clothing the hills of Brisbane, Australia.

Suburban jungle of houses clothing the hills of Brisbane - (near Mt. Gravatt, Queensland, Australia) instead of the retreating eucalypt forest. Hard, non-absorbant roofs, courtyards and street paving creates a very different catchment to the forest floor, which, with nutrients from mown lawns, pet faeces, detergents etc, pollutants eg. pesticides and leaking oil from cars, creates large volumes of polluted run-off. In time garden trees will provide some wildlife habitat, but species composition will shift toward a small number able to adapt. (Photo by Universal Images Group via Getty Images)
