Annual Hanging Of A Hot Cross Bun Above The Bar At Widow's Son Pub

LONDON, ENGLAND - APRIL 18: Royal Navel reservists from HMS President laugh during the annual hanging of a hot cross bun at the Widow's Son pub in Bromley-by-Bow on April 18, 2014 in London, England. The Widow's Son was built in 1848 upon the former site of an old widow's cottage who, when her only son left to be a sailor, promised to bake him a Hot Cross Bun and keep it for his return. The son never returned but the widow refused to give up hope, baking a fresh one each year. This annual tradition has been continued in the pub as a remembrance of the widow and her son, and of the bond between all those on land and sea, with sailors of the Royal Navy coming to place the bun in a net above the bar.
